Located in Elizabethton, Tennessee, the Elizabethton Star is an Associated Press affiliated afternoon daily newspaper with roots dating back to 1894. The Elizabethton Star sports section has won several awards in its existence, while providing the best preps coverage in Northeast Tennessee. The Star provides coverage of Carter County high school sports and Elizabethton’s lone professional sports franchise, the Elizabethton Twins, an Appalachian League rookie affiliate of the Minnesota Twins, while providing quality coverage of University of Tennessee, East Tennessee State University and Milligan College athletics. The section also provides wide coverage of regional motorsports events, particularly those held at nearby Bristol Motor Speedway and Bristol Dragway. In the fall, the paper often cover the Tennessee Titans football squad and produce multiple features and coverage of the Dallas Cowboys, particularly Cowboys All-Pro tight end Jason Witten, an Elizabethton native.

Wes Holtsclaw has been in charge of the Elizabethton Star sports department since October 2006. Wes began writing for the Star as a correspondent in 2001 and has also written sports articles for such publications as the award-winning Erwin Record, where he contributed the sports section for the annual Tennessee Press Association sweepstakes award winner in 2005-06, Knoxville News-Sentinel, Avery Journal and East Tennessee State University’s student paper the East Tennessean.
