Tim’s Spectrum

Sports Spectrum is a  popular weekly column written by Carter County’s local sports guru Tim Chambers. Chambers, a former Hampton Bulldog standout in the mid-to-late seventies and well-known former youth coach, began his column three years ago in the pages of the Star. He is perhaps one of the most knowledgeable sources of the history of high school and youth athletics in Carter County. Each week you will find Sports Spectrum in its entirety on this page.

Lady Cyclones’ win over Unicoi highlights week | 4-07-08

The Lady Cyclones win over Unicoi last week gave them sole possession of first place in the Watauga Conference.

For the first time in many moons ,the Lady Blue Devils find themselves trailing after Elizabethton’s 2-1 win in 11 innings.

Elizabethton has league games with Chuckey-Doak, Johnson County and West Greene this week. They played well in the NFS Classic despite losses to Unaka 3-1 and Elizabethton 3-0.

Chuckey-Doak’s 8-4 win over Elizabethton last week allowed Unicoi to take the top spot on the baseball side. But the Cyclones did avenge that loss with a 5-4 win on Friday.

In the Watauga Valley, first place is on the line today when Unaka travels to Hampton. Both are currently undefeated on the baseball side with identical 2-0 records.

Unaka has knocked off North Greene and University High in league play, while Hampton got past the Huskies by one run then earned a win over Cloudland. The two have played one common foe in non league games.

Unaka knocked off Johnson County last 9-8 while Hampton fell the Longhorns 10-0 on Friday.

Both will get tested this week at Unaka plays a makeup game at UH on Wednesday while Hampton will do likewise on Friday.

Little League

The Carter County American and Elizabethton National Little Leagues will be in full swing this week at Jim Ensor and T.J. Burleson Fields.

Fifteen teams make up both leagues with 180 kids slated to participate on the boy’s baseball side.

Once again Al King will be the official scorekeeper and announcer for the National Little League baseball. “Big Al” has touched the lives of many kids who have come up though the league including my son.

In addition to those two jobs King always makes sure we get game results and information when the Star is unable to send someone. With high school baseball and softball gong on at the present we sometimes are unable to cover our local youth leagues. Al always mentions several kids when providing us game results.

An outstanding athlete during his playing days King not only loves the game of baseball but he goes out of his way to be a friend to each and every player.

It’s men like Al King that make Little League baseball such a special event.
